ABOUT

Raj Saheb Gopi Mull Badhwar of Ferozpur was a cotton ginning magnet of the undivided Punjab and was a scion of a prominent industrial family of Kasur (Now in Pakistan). His father, Rai Sahab Nagar Mull Badhwar’s profound vision established a widespread industrial empire in the mid-1800s pioneering the usage of heavy industrial machinery in more than a dozen ginning mills in undivided Punjab since the nascency of the Indian cotton industry.

The then commissioner of the Kumaon region, Mr. A.W. Shakespeare invited Rai Saheb Gopi Mull to establish a cotton-ginning industry in the fertile 'Terai region’ of the United Provinces. In the year 1905, Rai Saheb purchased this 99 'bigha' mango orchard along with 3 revenue villages of, Gopipura, Chandpura, and Pratapura in Kashipur (NTL). Subsequently, his son, L Banka Mull Badhwar of Lahore (Now in Pakistan), imported 100 cotton ginning machine mills from the Platt Brothers LTD Oldham U.K. The mill was operated by a Lancashire Boiler and Steam engine. This ingenious industrial complex was planned by Firzoani & Co. Cawnpore at a cost of about 9 lakhs and was established in less than a year. It had its private railway platform with a hand-pulled railcart and a personal railway bogey. The mill produced cotton of a very high-quality fiber which sold at a premium in the international market.

Unfortunately, a plague struck Kashipur in the year 1931. The then owner L. Madan Gopal Badhwar converted the mill premises into a relief camp for the people of the town. However, the pandemic ultimately led to the closure of the mill. The 105 ft chimney you see here was surrounded by various buildings of which now only 5 remain; Anand Kothi, where the present owner, Mr. Anand Gopal Badhwar, and his family reside; Anand Villa originally the mill's visitor's bungalow; Aan's Lounge & Villa, the mills's Munim Khana & Munim Residence. A's Mansion & Nandi, are the parts that are remains of the original factory building. All of which has been restored into a residential and ceremonial compound celebrating the land and its legacy.
